Essential Oil Quality, Purity, and Labeling

Most essential oils on the market are used in the perfumery, cosmetics, and food industries with no-to-little therapeutic value.

Only about 2% of essential oils on the market are ‘therapeutic-grade’. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are considered to be the highest quality with nothing added or taken away, containing medicinal properties, and are considered generally safe for various uses, such as dietary, topical application, and inhalation. With proper low temperature and low pressure distillation; many of the subtle constituents as possible are preserved offering balance of the numerous constituents providing therapy. However, it’s important to note that the term ‘therapeutic-grade’ is not regulated by any officially recognized governmental authority in the United States, and that any company can claim their oils to be therapeutic-grade.

The authenticity, quality and purity of essential oils are directly linked to their constituent profile. Authentic and truly pure essential oils should contain a consistent and balanced composition of constituents, free from synthetic additives or contaminants. Rigorous testing and quality control measures are essential to ensure that the constituents are intact and in their natural form, preserving the oil’s therapeutic efficacy.

For Example: Using lavender oil that is available over-the-counter may not provide the expected benefits due to adulteration and mislabeling. A person could use what was thought as lavender oil to soothe a burn, only to find that the pain intensified and the burn worsened because in actually it was lavandin, a chemically distinct hybrid of lavender with high camphor levels, which can exacerbate burns. In contrast, pure Lavandula Angustifolia, the authentic lavender, contains minimal camphor and possesses burn-soothing properties absent in lavandin. This highlights the potential dangers of adulterated and mislabeled essential oils and the importance of ensuring the authenticity and purity of the products used.

A majority of essential oils available in the market are low-budget, adulterated, and of inferior quality. Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) has 187 constituents and synthetic lavender may only have 4 constituents. Furthermore, there is minimal regulation governing the labeling of essential oils. The term ‘100% Pure’ on a bottle can be misleading, as only 5% of the content is required to be genuinely pure essential oil, with the remaining 95% comprising fillers.

“Nature-identical” essential oils are structured oils that have been chemically replicated using 5 to 15 of the essential oil’s chemical compounds in synthetic form. It is important to note that these replicated oils can potentially lead to undesired side effects or toxicities.

The composition of essential oils can vary significantly depending on factors such as plant species, growing conditions, and extraction methods. To ensure efficacy and safety, it’s essential to source oils from reputable suppliers who adhere to strict quality control standards and provide transparent information about their sourcing and production processes. Third-party testing and certification can also help ensure authenticity.
